Tutor profiles

Maths Workshop Leader: Eva Ball

I have been teaching Maths at secondary level for around 20 years. I make Mathematics accessible for all by employing games, puzzles and problem-solving activities. There is no substitute for practice, particularly when preparing for exams, and so I use a range of exam-style questions to help students with their revision. When working on questions together I give guidance about clear workings, common mistakes and easy marks not to be missed. I take time to support the Student’s approach to the exam papers.  I also like to signpost my students to helpful websites and resources that they can use outside of our lessons.

I absolutely love Mathematics and find it a fascinating and beautiful subject.  As well as obvious practical uses, Mathematics is a  language and an art, full of patterns waiting to be discovered!  I recently spent time with a student composing music from the Fibonacci sequence.  Great fun!

Music is my other passion and as well as listening, I also play the flute, saxophone and a little guitar.  I spend quite a lot of time in my garden, growing flowers and food but also hanging out with my chickens!  They are so interesting and funny!  I’m also very concerned about the environment and play an active role in our local sustainability group, volunteering at the composting site where we take residents’ garden waste and turn it into lovely, peat-free compost.

Chemistry Workshop Leader: Barry Anderson

Barry is a qualified and experienced Chemistry teacher and has been an examiner for the Edexcel exam board since 2012. He has taught Chemistry to all age groups between 11 and 18, including many years at GCSE and A-level.

His delivery is lively and interactive, with an emphasis on understanding the content and making connections between the different parts of the syllabus. His experience as an examiner means he can share information about common mistakes and how to avoid them in exams.

Barry has tutored many students at both GCSE and A-level, many of whom have achieved the grades they needed in order to move on to the next stage of their education. Feedback from his students and from their parents has always been first-class.
